Buildings use almost 40% of all energy, emit nearly 40% of carbon dioxide emissions, use 13% of our freshwater resources, generate over two-thirds of all non-industrial secondary materials and form an indoor environment where Americans spend 90% of their time, subject to higher levels of pollution than in the outdoor environment.
In other words, buildings have broad impact on the environment, economy, natural resources and occupant health and productivity that extends far beyond the building footprint.
Since the federal government owns, rents, leases or otherwise controls 500,000 buildings, the mandate to build high-performance green buildings and modernize existing ones to achieve LEED ratings will have a significant environmental impact. The federal government already has 241 LEED certified projects with another 3,373 pursuing certification.*
GOVgreen Conference and Exposition will devote one of four educational tracks to Facilities with sessions including:
- From Retrofit to High Performance: the Federal Built Environment
- Beyond Office Space: Labs, Computing Centers and other High Impact Facilities
- Improving Building Energy Efficiency through Benchmarking
- Beyond Office Space: Labs, Computing Centers and other High Impact Facilities
Complete program at GOVgreen.org. Education free to government employees.
